SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Police are identifying the suicidal man shot and killed during a standoff in Scottsdale on Friday morning.

The Scottsdale Police Department spokesman Officer David Pubins said the man is 45-year-old Thomas Hawes.

A police spokesman said detectives were trying to contact Hawes for questioning about past sex crimes as he drove southbound on 83rd Street from Vista Drive.

Hawes pulled to the side of the road and officers noticed he had pointed a gun at himself.

He got out of his vehicle and fired at officers, who returned fire about 9:30 a.m.

Five officers were involved but none were hurt.

Pubins said Hawes was accused of molesting a girl beginning in 2003 for a seven-year period. The victim is now an adult and recently told police.

Pubins said the investigation is ongoing.
