A person has died after fire engulfed an apartment in north Phoenix.

A couple called late Sunday morning to report smoking coming from a neighboring apartment, according to Phoenix fire Capt. Tony Mure.

A body recovered in the fire's aftermath is suspected to have been a man who is about 65 years old and lived in the neighboring apartment in the 1400 block of East Maryland.

The fire had blown out through the windows and doors when firefighters first arrived, Mure.

A neighbor said the victim used a wheelchair to get around.

"With the 911 calls, if this is the elderly gentleman that lives in that apartment, he had a history of using supplemental oxygen so there were multiple oxygen tanks inside and he has a history of smoking," Mure said.

The name of the victim has not yet been released. The apartment was completely gutted, Mure said.

A woman who lives next door to the victim was driving back home from a car wash and saw smoke.

"I ran to go get him and screamed, 'Get out, get out,'" said Adrian, who didn't want her last name used.

"I went to open his gate and the house just started exploding," she said.

Several tenants in nearby apartments were temporarily displaced.

The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation by fire and police.
