ROCKY HILL, CT (WFSB) -

Snow, sleet and freezing rain caused a messy commute for Tuesday morning motorists and those slippery conditions continue to plague drivers through the afternoon.

The messy conditions lead to several crashes throughout the day Tuesday.

One person was killed during a multi-car crash that shutdown a portion of Route 9 northbound in Berlin around 1:30 p.m.

Dozens of crews including members of the Berlin Police Department, Berlin Fire Department and Connecticut State Police.

A rope was used to get someone who was down a 20 to 30 foot embankment off the highway.

The crash on Route 9 closed all northbound lanes between Exits 21 and 22. The highway reopened just after 4:30 p.m.

Earlier in the day, a FedEx truck slid off Interstate 91 south near exit 13 and down a steep embankment.

The crash caused some delays for drivers, but was cleared by the afternoon.

It is not clear if anyone was injured in the crash.

Route 140 in Somers was closed for about two hours while crews investigated after a head on crash in the area of Colorado Drive after 6:30 a.m.

Police said both drivers involved in the crash were brought to local hospitals to be treated for injuries. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

A crash involving a van and another vehicle was also reported on Route 2 eastbound in East Hartford Tuesday afternoon.

A tractor-trailer crash was occurred on Interstate 84 westbound between Exits 59 and 58 just before 1:30 p.m. The crash closed four left lanes for an unknown period of time.

The Wethersfield Police also reported a "influx of car accidents," due to the changing weather and road conditions.

"Beware of icing conditions that appear unexpectedly," the Wethersfield Police Department said in a statement Tuesday.

Emergency officials warned motorists to stay off the roads if possible Tuesday night because temperatures are expected to drop, which could lead to black ice.

According to the Channel 3 Early Warning Weather Center, 1 to 3 inches of snow were expected at the shore, and 3 to 6 inches are expected elsewhere.

The precipitation continued much of the day Tuesday.
