GRAPELAND, TX (KTRE) -

City officials in Grapeland have suspended the town's police chief with pay for 30 days.

Grapeland Mayor George Pierson said the town's leaders made John Smith's suspension effective as of the last city council meeting, which was held on March 12. Pierson said he was unable to give any further details on why Smith was suspended, adding that the chief had a right to a complete due process review.

The Grapeland City Council will make its final decision on Smith's fate at its next meeting, which is scheduled for April 9.

Investigator Chuck Franklin will serve as the acting chief of the Grapeland Police Department until the council reaches a final decision.
