Hit-and-run suspect a Valley attorney, former ME

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A woman suspected in the fatal hit-and-run of a woman lying naked in the middle of a Phoenix street is an attorney and former medical examiner with Maricopa County.

Aimee Lorine Butel, 43, was arrested and booked into jail early Saturday morning on one count of felony hit-and-run and two misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence, according to court paperwork.

Police said a preliminary breath test showed Butel had a blood-alcohol content of 0.129 percent, above the state legal limit of 0.08 percent.

CBS 5 News confirmed that Butel is a personal injury attorney with the firm of Knapp & Roberts PC. According to her biography on the firm's website, Butel graduated from Arizona State University, where she earned a certification in health law and was admitted to the Arizona Bar in 2012.

She also graduated from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 2000 and practiced forensic pathology before attending law school. She also is a former medical examiner with Maricopa County.

Witnesses told police the 37-year-old victim began taking her clothes off and ran into the street near 34th Street and Thomas Road just before 12:30 a.m. Saturday when she was struck by a small, blue sedan.

Witnesses said the driver of the car stopped about a block away and one of the passengers went back to check on the woman. When she returned to the car, Butel allegedly told her passengers she was going to take them home.

Phoenix police officers stopped a light blue Toyota Yaris with front-end damage near 3700 E. Thomas Road, where officers gave Butel a field sobriety test.

Police said Butel and the passengers admitted to having hit the pedestrian but no one attempted to contact police, according to the court document.

Butel was released from jail Saturday, police said.
