Community members say new school could help ETX students & the local economy

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

A new Career and Technical Education Center, or CTE, could be coming to Tyler ISD.

The center is part of the $160.5 million dollar TISD bond proposal on Tyler's May ballot.

"It really prepares our students and makes them job ready and college ready for the workforce," says Mark Randall, president of Tyler Proud, a political action committee in favor of the bond.

Many at Monday night's presentation agreed.

"I believe that it will touch so many students in many different ways by giving those children the skills that they need to either help themselves through college or to go immediately into a profession right out of high school," says Courtney Burlison, a Tyler ISD mother.

Tom Mullins, president of the Tyler Economic Development Council, says the school will allow students to step into local jobs and hopefully boost the local economy.

"Our job is to try to help grow the economy and promote business and businesses will not be successful if they cannot find qualified candidates to work for them ... Now so many jobs are being created that require technical skills but not necessarily a four year degree."

Those skills are the ones local business owners are desperate to find.

"We know in our business that people knowing a trade, there are very few, there's a huge demand," says Brian Adams, a TISD father whose family owns a Tyler business.

TISD students already taking CTE classes say building a CTE center will change the lives of many more students.

"Being in a CTE school, the leadership roles they teach you, the responsibility, it just pushes you that much further to want to go to college," says Mary Kate Murphy, a TISD high school senior.

Murphy is graduating in May but hopes the center is there for the next generation to enjoy.

If approved, the Career and Technical Center is estimated to cost around $33 million and would be finished in Fall of 2015.
