ETX fire chief says Wood County grass fire is just the start of a bad fire season

WOOD COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Alba fire officials are hoping a large grass fire they put out on Wednesday does not spread overnight.

The grass fire started at around 2:00 p.m. in Wood County, just outside of Alba, off of County Road 1530.

The Alba Fire Department Chief says the Texas A&M Forest Service, along with five different fire departments, responded to the fire.

Officials say a man was burning trash and hay bales when it spread to a nearby pasture.

It took firefighters more than 4 hours to get the fire under control. Firefighters say around 27 acres are burned.

The Alba Fire Chief, Shawn Newland, says he thinks this is just the start of a bad fire season.

"If the wind's blowing, please do not burn. If you have to do it that's fine, as far as farm and agriculture goes, but just to be burning, please don't do it."

No one was injured in the fire.
