WIKIEUP, AZ (CBS5) -

A Bakersfield, CA, woman died and her husband and son injured when her husband was forced to land their plane outside Wikieup in northwestern Arizona on Thursday morning, the FAA said.

The Mohave County Sheriff's Office said Josephine Simos Chan, 49, died in the landing.

Her husband, Vidson Yaukong Chan, 48, was flown to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, and their 13-year-old son, Cody William Chan, was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Phoenix. Both are also from Bakersfield and suffered broken bones, according to Mohave County Sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter.

The single-engine Mooney M20 experienced engine problems, forcing it to land in an open area three miles south-southeast of Wikieup at 11:15 a.m., according to preliminary information supplied by FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.

Gregor said the plane sustained substantial damage.

The aircraft was apparently flying from Sedona to Minter Field in Shafter, CA, Gregor said.

MCSO said dispatchers got a call about 11:30 a.m. from a young man stating their plane had crashed, according to sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter. The young man told 911 that he and his mom and dad were onboard.

Mohave County Sheriff's Search and Rescue units rushed to the area east of Burro Creek Crossing, near milepost 32 on Highway 93 and about 11 miles east of Highway 93.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the accident. NTSB is the lead investigative agency.
