HOUSTON COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Deputies from the Houston County Sheriff's Office arrested an East Texas couple for felony theft after they allegedly stole a large amount of scrap metal from the Smith Ranch in early March.

Jennifer Kaye Sumrall, of Livingston, and Chester Aaron Gorsha, of Grapeland, are still being held in the Houston County Jail. Both of them were charged with theft between $1,500 and $20,000, which is a state-jail felony. No bail has been set at this time.

According to an arrest affidavit, a Houston County Sheriff's Office deputy was dispatched out to Smith Ranch on FN 2022, where the complainant told him that someone had stolen a large amount of metal valued between $1,500 and $20,000 from the property.

When the HCSO deputy spoke with one of the neighbors, the man told him that about three weeks earlier, he witnessed Sumrall and someone later identified as Gorsha, her husband, enter the property and load metal items onto a trailer. The neighbor said when he confronted the couple about what they were doing, they told him that the owners of the ranch gave them permission to clean up the scrap metal on their property.

The property owner told the deputy that no one had been given permission to be on the property or remove any items from the property.
