PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Maricopa County sheriff's deputies have arrested a man suspected of shooting an Aguila woman to death in her home on Monday.

Deputies said Jose Zarate, 25, was arrested Wednesday morning at his home in Aguila, about 45 miles northwest of Phoenix.

Zarate and 31-year-old Maria Saucedo were arguing about 9:30 p.m. in her home in the small town west of Wickenburg when she was shot, according to a sheriff's spokesman.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said Zarate went to the home allegedly wanting a romantic relationship with Saucedo's 12-year-old daughter.

When Saucedo said "no" to his request, Zarate pulled out a rifle and shot her in the chest at close range while her daughter was in the room, according to MCSO.

MCSO said Zarate then tried to shoot Saucedo's sister who was at the home, but the gun malfunctioned.

A friend heard the gunshot and was able to get Zarate's gun before he ran from the house, the spokesman said.

MCSO said on Tuesday about 10:15 p.m., Zarate called detectives and said he wanted to surrender.

He was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on Wednesday on second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault and prohibited weapon possession.

MCSO said Zarate has been living in the U.S. without proper authorization.
