Austin Symphony to play Huntington teen's composition

HUNTINGTON, TX (KTRE) -

He is only 17, but a Huntington musician has a major accomplishment under his name.

Wednesday night his musical composition will be played by the Austin Symphony Orchestra.

It's music to one's ears.

"I was literally just sitting down writing the melody one time and I heard thunder in the distance, and I thought, 'Wow, that sounds really good with this melody,'" Timothy Dow said.

It's the sounds of "An Evening Storm" composed by Dow.

"So, I kept writing the piece of music with the concept of a storm you know in the evening when you hear you know that distant thunder, and then it comes and it's just chaos," Dow said.

The teen wrote the piece for the Austin Symphony's annual young composers competition.

"I started writing the piece for it," Dow said. "It took me about a month to write it all down, and I submitted it. I asked them a couple questions about it and they got back with me pretty quick."

But his ability to compose music started from trial and error. His passion for music started at a young age. Also a talented cello player, he first learned to play the piano when he was 5.

Now at just 17, Dow has made a major accomplishment.

He was chosen as a finalist to be premiered in the Texas Young Composers Symphony.

His work "An Evening Storm" will be performed by the entire Orchestra of the Austin Symphony.

"It is almost scary thinking about it. You know, these people play you know all the amazing composers all the time. They play all the composers I look up to -- Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven, and all of them. And now hearing them play now my piece is just amazing."

Timothy and his family are in Austin now and will have the chance to watch the symphony rehearse tonight and are also excited to be present at Wednesday's concert.
