A woman crossing a Phoenix street mid-block was struck and killed by an SUV early Thursday morning.

Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the woman was crossing Seventh Street south of Dunlap Avenue just before 6:30 a.m. when she was hit by the southbound vehicle in one of the city's reverse lanes, a middle-of-the-street turn lane restricted during certain hours.

The woman was taken to a Phoenix hospital, where she died.

Seventh Street was expected to be closed for several hours for the police investigation, Thompson said.

No other information was immediately available.
