Allen family responds to Echols guilty plea

Posted: Updated:
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas man has been sentenced to a decade in prison after he crashed his car, killing an East Texas mother who was riding with him.

In October of 2012, Justin Lee Echols was driving with his passenger, Michele Allen of Harleton.  The wreck happened on county road 217 in Smith County near Overton.

Michele was killed in that crash, and Echols fled the scene.

Echols plead guilty to criminally negligent homicide and accident involving injury.

Today in court the Allen family was able to address Echols.

"He should have stayed with her but he wasn't man enough to do that," 9 year old Isaac Allen said.

Tonia Allen said she was angry when she took the stand in her victim impact statement.

"When I was sitting up there I was angry. He wasn't showing any remorse," Tonia Allen said.

"He never told me if he was sorry or not," Isaac Allen said.

The two sentences will be served concurrently. So, he will be eligible for parole after four years.
