Over 1,000 gather to bid farewell to slain Kaufman Co. DA, wife

SUNNVYVALE, TX (KLTV) -

It was estimated that more than 1,000 people attended the public memorial service Thursday for Mike and Cynthia McLelland at the First Baptist Church of Sunnyvale.

The people gathered in the church came to remember the couple they said were a mismatched pair that God brought together in a true love story.

Faith played a big part in Thursday's service, with songs like "I Can Only Imagine" and "It is
Well With My Soul" being played as family, friends and officials from all over Texas came to
honor the McLellands.

Retired Colonel Brice Barnes served with Mike McLelland in the Army and came to the service
from Dripping Springs.

"He was a good soldier, dedicated to what he was doing, was very, very professional. And I just came here to say adios," said Colonel Barnes, saluting his friend.

Carma Sullivan served on the Lions Club with Mike McLelland.

"Several members of our club are involved in the court system and law enforcement. And they're all so important to us, every one of them," Sullivan said. "So we want to be here for them and for Mike and his family."

But others came to honor the McLellands, too, people who had never met them but who were moved
by their story.

"It really hurt me when I saw the casket and I realized how much the McLellands and Mr. Hasse gave for Texas and how much I respect them for what they did," said Mark Thompson of Garland.

And it was the McLelland's personal touches people saw - family photos, his Army uniform, a
quilt she had made, a flag flown for Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse
after he was killed just two months ago - as they came to say goodbye.

The memorial service was also called a time of continuance, not only for the McLelland family,
but for the public servants of Kaufman County.

A family visitation is being held Thursday night at the First Baptist Church of Wortham, Texas.

Funeral and burial services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in Wortham. Wortham is Mike
McLelland's hometown and is 75 miles south of Dallas.

Temporarily calling the Nacogdoches Animal Shelter a home, Remi is hoping to find something a little more permanent. Caretakers said the one-year-old dog is playful and loves attention. Remi was brought into the shelter as a stray about three weeks ago. "He gets along with the other dogs. He still in his puppy stage so he still has a lot of time to go around play with everyone," said Torion Johnson, animal control officer.  Remi is a heeler-spani...
