Uganda Children's Choir performing in ETX

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

A group of children from an African orphanage is visiting an East Texas commissioner's court to learn more about government and democracy in America.

The Children's Choir of Uganda flew more than 8,000 miles from the central African country, to Tyler.

The choir was at the Smith County commissioners court this morning and the public came out to watch them perform.

The children are from Uganda, and most of them have families from East Texas sponsoring them in their education, living expenses, and gospel learning.

The children are sponsored under the program Parental Care Ministries, and the base of the non-profit organization is here in Tyler.

More than 400 families in the East Texas area have selected a child to take care of, by sending a small amount of money to Uganda monthly.

"When you go over there and you watch an orphan give their only coin and put it in an offering basket, you realize you're not as generous as these kids are, they make me more generous," says Executive Director of Parental Care Ministries Doctor Mark Barret.

Barret says Uganda Children's Choir is here to not just bring fantastic talent of music and instruments, but to bring thanks as well.

"What their purpose on this trip is to thank the supporters, thank the sponsors, meet the sponsors. Some of these kids have their sponsors that live here in town, almost half of them are here in town, just to see the reunion of the families and the sponsor kids," says Barret.

Uganda Children's Choir represent the thousand children in Uganda that live by small means daily, yet bring forth joy and happiness.

This isn't the programs first time to come to America but it is the first time for this group of children.
Pastor Emmy, founder of Parental Care Ministries, is hoping that they take the generosity of this area back to their homes in Africa.

"People here, however big they are or how big their size or integrity is... they are humbled and they do everything," Pastor Emmy said.

"For them to come here and see how our democracy has flourished and the opportunities in America, I think it's great for people to see that," says Smith County Commissioner Pr ct. 1 Jeff War.
