Teenager catches 759 lb. marlin off Oahu

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A 19-year-old reeled in a huge catch Sunday morning in Oahu waters.

Sterling Ellis from Houston, Texas caught a 759 lb. blue marlin about 15 miles off of Kewalo Basin. He traveled to Hawaii as part of the Make-A-Wish program.

The captain of the boat, "The Wild Bunch," says Ellis did exactly what he was supposed to do with a little help from the crew.

"I was reeling it, and then I saw this big black fin and it just started going the opposite direction taking all my line back," said Ellis.  "My arm hurt a little bit, and he's like 'just keep reeling' and I'm like, 'I don't think I can!'"

It took more than an hour to reel the huge marlin in.

Ellis will get to keep the marlin's bill, and the rest will be sold by the charter boat to pay for fuel.
