Police: Thieves 'knew what they were doing' in strategic weekend break-ins

Police are searching for the person or people responsible for two weekend break-ins in west Tyler.

Sunday morning, employees at Cato and the Dollar Tree on Highway 64 West arrived to work to find their doors locked and chained as usual. Once inside, they realized someone had made an overnight break-in through their back doors.

Signs on the front of Cato tell customers they can't make change because all of their cash was stolen over the weekend. Both Cato and the Dollar Tree stores had holes strategically drilled through the doors, compromising the locks. The thieves brought other tools along with them to break into the safes and to tamper with store surveillance video.

"It was a night-time burglary. They had the intent of going for the safes and what was in the safes. They had what they needed to gain access into that and they knew what they were doing," says officer Don Martin with the Tyler Police Department.

Money was stolen out of the money bags from the stores, but so far, it appears no merchandise was taken.
