Committee votes not to close firehouse in Meriden

Posted: Updated:

The Finance Committee voted Tuesday night to recommend not to close the Engine 3 fire house in Meriden.

The proposal called for Engine 3 on Broad Street, which is responsible for serving uptown and southeastern parts of the city, to be closed as a cost cutting measure.

City officials previously told Eyewitness News the closure of the firehouse could save nearly $900,000, which is money that would otherwise come from taxpayer pockets.

However, closing the firehouse could increase response times, city and fire officials said.

Firefighters from Engine 3 said they handled more than 2,200 calls last year.

Firefighters told Eyewitness News if Engine 3 closes, Engine 2, which is closest, would pick up most of the slack. Last year, firefighters went out on more 3,100 calls at Engine 2, and Engine 4 saw more than 1,550 calls.

The finance committee voted 4-1 against the proposal, and now it goes to the City Council for a vote on May 6.

Meriden neighbors told Eyewitness News they were not too happy about the plan being on the table.

"We need our firehouse here," said one resident. "We just had a fire not too long ago."
