It's been a while since the Nacogdoches softball team has been in the hunt and had a serious chance to make a run at the state title. This year's squad though, has a realistic shot to make it to Austin. The lady Dragons are heading into the area round of the playoffs on a current 12 game winning streak.
Head Coach Clarence McMichael's team won its 1st district title since 2004 by going a perfect 10 and 0 in league play. The lady dragons then swept red oak in the 1st round of the playoffs, outscoring them 27 to 0. "I think we are coming together at the right time, you know sometimes you can peak too early, and I think we are on the uphill slide right now." "We are all hitting the ball really well and playing really solid as a team, so we are confident heading into the next round."
Scoring runs is the name of the game, and that's why Nacogdoches is so dangerous. The Lady Dragons have scored 13 or more runs 10 times this season and are averaging just under eight runs per game."As soon as we get up by 4 or 5, I know that we are going to score more." "It's really big, it's good to have one through nine in the line-up that can hit, you know we aren't weak anywhere."
Team chemistry is also a strong point for this team. The girls have been playing together for years now and understand what it takes to be successful."We know each other. We know when to do what. We have each other's back so that means a lot to." "We have a motto of family so it's a family concept, so when one is down we are there to pick the other up."
As for adding its name in Nacogdoches softball history, this squad knows it's their time to shine.
"My cousin was on the 2004 team that went to state so it's kind of cool that it's our chance to go far and make history." "I have been there twice with both daughters of mine; you know this team has alto of talent on it. We have a chance to do it.
