Arizonans plan pro-immigration march in Phoenix

PHOENIX (AP) -

Activists say hundreds of Arizonans are expected at a pro-immigration march marking International Workers' Day.

The Arizona Comprehensive Immigration Reform Coalition is hosting the march Wednesday night.

Organizers are directing supporters to lobby lawmakers for a proposed immigration bill that would create a path toward citizenship for 11 million immigrants illegally in the country.

The legislation backed by President Barack Obama and Republicans and Democrats in Congress would be the nation's first immigration overhaul in nearly three decades.

The event will start at the Arizona State Capitol and end in downtown Phoenix, where many immigrants work illegally in the service and tourism industries. Proponents say immigrants are a crucial part of the nation's labor force.

Arizona approved a first-of-its-kind anti-illegal immigration law in 2010.
