SFA baseball falls to Northwestern State

Posted: Updated:

Northwestern State struck for five runs in the first five innings and followed a complete-game effort from starter Robert Baker in taking a 6-0 win over Stephen F. Austin on Friday at Jaycees Field in the series opener between the teams.

The loss was the fifth in a row for SFA (23-23, 10-9 SLC), while it extends the Demons (14-33, 3-16 SLC) win streak to three straight.

Baker struck out seven and walked four, allowing just four singles on the evening. He moved to 4-4 on the year, while Chase Greening fell to 4-3 for SFA after allowing five runs – three earned – in 5.0 innings, striking out five.

The ‘Jacks did not have an extra-base hit on the night, but did get singles from Ricardo Sanchez, Mackenzie Handel, Hunter Dozier and Jordon Lenaburg. Max Lamantia also drew a pair of walks.

Northwestern State got a pair of unearned runs in the second inning on an SFA throwing error after the inning was extended by a wild pitch on what would have been an inning-ending strikeout to Garrett Kilgore.

Two innings later the Demons struck again on a two-run double by Kilgore to deep center after a pair of Demon hitters reached via walk. One inning later a leadoff runner reaching base stung the ‘Jacks with Edwin Gomez reaching on a single and eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly from Will Watson.

That was enough to chase Greening from the game after just five frames; meanwhile, Baker was cruising, allowing multiple base runners in just two innings in the game. He got another run of cushion in the seventh on a passed ball.

SFA will try and even the series with the Demons on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the middle game of the three-game set. Kyle Cross is set to get the start for the ‘Jacks.
