LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin man drove away with a brand-new Dodge Ram pickup from Southern Chrysler Dodge Jeep Monday morning. John Kennedy won his new ride in the Angelina Benefit Rodeo raffle, and officials announced his name Saturday.
"My phone started blowing up. I got multiple phone callas and text and I really couldn't believe it. I guess I just got lucky," said Kennedy.
Kennedy said that he has bought tickets for the rodeo raffles for the last thirty or so years and could have never imagined winning.
"Those are all one dollar tickets and that's the thing about it. They were able to do all of this through small donations from the entire community is enough to make that kind of money."
The Lufkin Lions Club put on the Angelina Benefit Rodeo at the George H. Henderson Expo Center in Lufkin April 24-27. Cowboys from all over the United States competed at the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association-sanctioned event.
Members of the Lufkin Lions Club sold more than 35,000 tickets, which means the organization raised more than $175,000.
"Those are all one dollar tickets and that's the thing about it. They were able to do all of this through small donations from the entire community is enough to make that kind of money," said Lions Club President Keven Ellis.
Most of the proceeds from the rodeo and the raffle ticket sales go to help the Lufkin State Supported Living Center.
