The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams will be in Lake Charles, La., Friday through Sunday competing at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. The meet will take place at the Cameron Communications Track and Field Complex.
Finals will take place at the beginning of the meet with the 10,000-meter run slated to begin at 8 a.m. Friday. The decathlon and heptathlon are slated for a 10 a.m. start Friday. Preliminary rounds of the track events are slated to begin Saturday at 3 p.m., with the finals coming on Sunday. The first field events will take place at 3 p.m. Friday with the women's hammer throw, followed by the men's hammer.
The Ladyjacks enter the championship meet looking for a conference record fifth-consecutive outdoor title. The SFA women will also be looking to extend their conference record streak of nine consecutive titles overall (indoor and outdoor). Currently SFA is one of only three league schools to win four-straight outdoor titles, and one of only two current league members to win an outdoor championship.
The Lumberjacks enter the meet looking to maintain the momentum from their 2013 indoor title. The SFA men rallied in the final three events to take the indoor crown, their first since the 2005 season. The Lumberjacks are the last current league member to win and outdoor title (2011).
Both the SFA men and women have several athletes leading the conference in their respective events. Junior Cass Brown-Stewart is currently the SLC's top 400-meter sprinter, and also runs the anchor leg of the top 4x400-meter relay team. Junior Jamal Peden currently holds the top mark in the long jump, while senior Jon Arthur has posted the top throw in the shot put. For the Ladyjacks, sophomore Melai Carter tops the charts in the high jump while Madison Johnston leads the SLC in the javelin.
