Former employees of Aztec Sun Tanning speak out about owner

Earlier this week we told you about how Aztec Sun Tanning continued to sell tanning packages at its Storrs location just before abruptly closing its doors, and now former employees are opening up about the owner.

Following our original report, a number of frustrated customers and co-workers reached out the Channel 3 Eyewitness News saying they too had issues with Aztec Sun Tanning, adding there were red flags all along, but never thought it would end with the facility suddenly closing its doors.

"It's just shocking because it was literally gone overnight," said one former co-worker who didn't want to be identified.

She said she wanted to open up about her experience after seeing our report.

"Everything started to go downhill," she said. "That's when I stopped getting paid. When I did, my paycheck would bounce. It was a snowball effect after that."

And last week the tanning beds were suddenly gone and the Storrs salon was locked up for good.

Employees said there was about an eight-week period that employees were not getting paid and that all changed when they went to the Department of Labor.

Employees said that's when they found out about the owner's criminal history.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News did some digging into their claims and found out that in November 2002, Jason Girard was sentenced to 57 months in a federal jail after pleading guilty to possession and distribution of ecstasy and charged related to the illegal use of stolen property.

He was released in October 2006.

"I had no idea who he was as a person," the former employee said.

Girard did send his employees a Facebook message after the "untimely closure" and said it was the only option after rent was increased.

He ended by saying, "sorry for the short notice," adding it was a business decision that had to be made and closed with, "good luck."

The attorney general said no complaints have been filed against Aztec Sun Tanning, but any potential victims that purchased a package can contact its Consumer Protection Department.

We'll keep digging for more answers and will bring you more as soon as we get it.
