PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Two men were in the hospital after an apparent domestic dispute ended with the shooter walking into a Valley emergency room and turning the gun on himself Monday night.

Phoenix police said a 28-year-old man came into a Jamba Juice store at 27th Avenue and Thunderbird Road and forced three employees to the rear of the business, taking their cell phones and disabling the store's phone, according to Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump.

One of the employees was the man's ex-boyfriend, who was forced at gunpoint out the back door, Crump said. They went to the suspect's SUV, got into a fight and the suspect dropped his gun, regained control and then shot his ex-boyfriend twice, Crump said.

The 24-year-old ex-boyfriend suffered gunshot wounds to a hand and his upper body.

Police said the shooter then drove himself to John C. Lincoln Hospital near Interstate 17 and the Loop 101 freeway.

"He had a gun to his head, the security contacted us, when we arrived on scene the suspect shot himself," said Phoenix police Lt. Sean Kennedy

The shooter was in critical condition and the wounded employee was in serious condition but is expected to survive.

Police are still investigating the relationship between the two and what they might have been fighting about.

John C. Lincoln Hospital officials released this statement Tuesday afternoon:

"John C. Lincoln Health Network is committed to the health and safety of our patients and our employees. Last night's occurrence is an unfortunate incident. The police department was on-site and in the presence of the person at the time of the incident. We remain grateful that our employees and patients were safe and we have counseling support available for our team members who were working last night.

"For the past five years John C. Lincoln Health Network has contracted for security services with HSS, Healthcare Security Services. The needs for security services for our facilities are continually monitored and evaluated to ensure the safety of our patients and our employees.

"Based on the ongoing evaluations of our security needs, our security systems and staffing have been and will continue to be adjusted as needed to ensure the safety and well-being of our patients and employees.

"We are closely evaluating each detail of the incident that occurred in our emergency department last night and will identify any opportunities for improvements."
