LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Tonight is a once in a lifetime moment for one East Texan. Woodville's Kree Harrison has the chance to become the next "American Idol."
When Harrison takes the stage for the finale of "American Idol" tonight, fans all over the world will be rooting for the native East Texan. If she wins, she will join a list of other East Texans that have soared into the spot light on reality shows like Zavalla's Dustin Ellerman, who won the History Channel "Top Shot" competition.
"I do believe that the top shot title belongs in Texas," Ellerman said. "It just goes along with our culture of God and guns, so yeah it belonged here."
The Murdoch brothers from Martinsville made a name for themselves on Animal Planet's newest show, "Catfish Kings."
"I don't know if people believe East Texas are country or redneck or whatever you call it, but I think that people getting chosen for reality shows from Texas show that Texas is a good place to live," Ronald Murdoch said.
Then there are the police officers from Trinity who make up the cast of CMT's "Big Texas Heat."
"I'm a proud Texan, so anything that will put Texas out there is great," said Trinity Police Chief Steven Jones. "Even though we are a comedy reality show, I still want people to be proud of it and happy."
The reality star is not surprised that Harrison is in the finals.
"We got a lot of people, and a lot of great entertainment has come out of Texas," Jones said.
The other East Texas reality TV stars hey have some advice for Kree as she climbs to star status.
"Top Shot producers said, 'Yeah, Dustin, your life's going to change,' and I was like, 'Yeah, I was giving it about maybe 6 month, wave, and it would all be back to normal, and it's been almost two years, and life's not back to normal," Ellerman said. "So … it does change but use it for the better."
"It is gonna change your life, but for the most part, it will stay the same," Murdoch said.
Win or lose, Harrison's fans in East Texas will always call her their own.
The live finale of American Idol starts tonight at 7 p.m. on Fox. The results will be announced tomorrow night.
