SFA baseball drops series opener with Islanders

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi right-hander Trevor Foss struck out eight in a complete-game effort of Stephen F. Austin in a 4-2 win by the Islanders in the series opener on Thursday afternoon at Jaycees Field.

The 'Jacks (27-26, 14-11 SLC) managed only four hits on the day, and were not able to take advantage of the second complete game of the year from starter Chase Greening. The senior scattered nine hits on the day and allowed all four Islander (31-21, 16-9 SLC) runs - three earned - in his nine innings of work, striking out five with just one walk. His five strikeouts moved him into a tie with Tyler Herriage for eighth all-time at SFA, and past Herriage for third in single-season strikeouts.

Foss moved to 8-6 on the year with the win, and kept the Islanders within striking distance of league-leading Sam Houston State in the Southland Conference race. He walked just one and did not allow a run until Hunter Dozier's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. Dozier finished the day 1-for-4, smashing his league-leading 17th home run of the season and extending his school-record steak to 43 consecutive games of reaching base safely.

SFA will try to even the series on Friday at 6:30 p.m. against the Islanders.
