SFA's Olson named track and field coach of the year

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Stephen F. Austin head track and field coach Phil Olson has been named 2013 Southland Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Coach of the Year announced league officials Thursday afternoon. Olson also swept the league's coaching honors during the indoor season as well.

SFA put together one of the most dominant seasons in Southland history during the 2012-13 campaign. The Ladyjacks and Lumberjacks won five of a possible six conference titles between cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field, including the Ladyjacks sweep of all three sports. It was the second time in the past three seasons the Ladyjacks have won the conference's track and field triple crown.

The SFA men's and women's team became only the third school in conference history to sweep the indoor and outdoor championships, becoming the only current league member to accomplish the feat. For the Ladyjacks, it was their fifth consecutive outdoor title, and 10 straight, while the SFA men won their second outdoor crown in the past three seasons, in addition to their 2013 sweep.

SFA had 26 All-SLC athletes, eight individual champions and a relay title in Lake Charles. Each team recorded four individual titles and 13 all-conference athletes, with the 'Jacks claiming the 1,600-meter relay title.

SFA is currently fourth all-time in Southland history with 17 track and field championships. Olson's troops have produced more titles than any other current league member. Olson's four coach of the year honors this season give him 17 for his career. With the two honors during the outdoor season, Olson past Texas-Arlington's John Sauerhage for the most track and field coach of the year honors in Southland history.
