Longtime Nacogdoches Official Dies

For 37 years, Cleon Compton served as Nacogdoches City Secretary. He was the answer man for other city leaders. Compton worked on budgets, elections, projects...just about anything pertaining to the city.

He retired in 1997, but almost to his dying day was active despite the pain his illness brought. In order to do that, you have to be committed at what you do. Compton was that. Compton's character led to his ability to work with and for many people. Six mayors, four city managers, numerous city commissioners, at over 700 commission meetings to be exact.

Chances are, Compton himself kept those stats. The dedicated worker, the encouraging little league coach, the devoted family man will go down in history for a man that helped build Nacogdoches.
