Nacogdoches women win Lighten Up contest

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - The stars were lined up over two Nacogdoches participants in the Lighten Up East Texas challenge.

They each won major prizes in the six-month regional weight loss program.

One is driving a new a car, another planning a big trip.

Sara McShan monitors her daily steps, but knows she can drive away in a brand new Dodge Dart.

"And it's really pretty," McShan said. "It's nice."

Linda Dorsett won a $5,000 dream vacation. Both women successfully lost at least five percent of their body weight between November and April. That made them eligible for the Lighten Up drawing, which to them really wasn't the incentive to lose weight.

"The incentive was to get healthier," Dorsett said. "I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in November."

"First and foremost I attribute it to the Lord and then my husband's support and Curves Complete," McShan said.

The unexpected endorsement for exercise, meal planning and coaching makes a Curves owner very happy.

"I am so proud of them for losing the five percent body fat which equaled 11 pounds and 14 and a half pounds for Sara," said Sharon Roberts.

And that was just during the six-month period. Since the women began a healthier lifestyle they've shed much more weight and the pounds are still coming off.

"My blood pressure has dropped to normal or below normal," Dorsett said. "My cholesterol has dropped. My kidney function is up. So everything is looking good."

"After having seen what they're doing, across the whole region, I believe it's a real good awareness program," McShan said.

Both women want East Texans to know you're never too old to embark on a healthier lifestyle.
