8-year-old girl alone when Antioch home catches fire

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

An 8-year-old girl was at home alone when her Antioch house caught fire Tuesday afternoon.

The fire was reported about 1 p.m. on Miners Cove and apparently began outside the back of the house.

Neighbors saw smoke and flames and called 911. One ran over and started banging on the door so hard it opened. Once inside, she saw the girl home alone watching TV, not even realizing the house was on fire.

Firefighters arrived and quickly put the fire out.

The mother came home and seemed shaken about what happened. She said she is a single mother of two - the 8-year old and an infant - and she was working at the time of the fire.

Neighbor Stephanie Wallace is also a single mom, but said she would never leave her young kids home alone.

"I understand parents have to work. I'm a single parent myself, but we can't do this. This is a warning because that child could have not been saved out of that house. We could all be crying because that child could have died in that home," Wallace said.

The girl was transported to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital to be checked out as a precaution.

Officials contacted the Department of Children's Services, and a case worker will talk with the mother and determine whether the little girl will be placed in DCS custody or be allowed to stay with the mother.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
