Freedom Fighters: Herman Edwards

Posted: Updated:

In 1943, at the age of 18, Herman Edwards was drafted into the U.S. Army.

He was trained as an engineer and as a medical corpsman. His battalion built bridges across Europe, including  the historic 1,200 foot bridge across the Rhine.

On May 1, 1945, Edwards' battalion was ordered to Dachau, site of one of the most infamous Nazi Death Camps of World War Two.

There he photographed thousands of bodies stacked like cord wood, a horrific site he says he will never forget.
