Victim of East Texas motel fire dies in Dallas hospital

SULPHUR SPRINGS, TX (KLTV) -

The victim of a fire at a motel on Saturday in Sulphur Springs has died in a Dallas hospital.

According to Eric Hill of the Sulphur Springs Fire Department, Rena Goodson, a Holly Lake Ranch resident, was flown to the burn unit at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas where she died.

The fire started around 4 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Best Western Trail Dust Inn off of Interstate 30 in Sulphur Springs. Firefighters say the fire started on the second floor of the main building. An employee went from door to door, waking people up.

Firefighters from Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Brinker and Cumby battled the blaze at the motel, which has 99 rooms, all of which were occupied. Around 100 people had to be evacuated from the motel. 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
