Backpack program feeds needy children on weekends

The East Texas Food Bank and ConAgra Food Foundation have teamed up to feed needy children on the weekends as part of their backpack program.

According to the East Texas Food Bank, one in four East Texas children are at risk of hunger.

"We've identified areas where kids might go hungry over the weekend and we want to make sure that doesn't happen. So we're grateful for the fourth year in a row for ConAgra Foods Foundation to give this generous gift to us so we can have the summer backpack program," said the Communications Director at the East Texas Food Bank, Karolyn Davis.

The backpack program runs throughout the school year and is also extended through the summer.

"This is an extension of that program to make sure there is no hunger gap over the summer or the weekend," said Davis.

The sites are only open on on weekdays so they send backpacks of food for the children over the weekend. The backpack is filled with sealed foods so the  food stays fresh over the weekend.

Crystal Morales and Cristie Rubio, regulars at the Our Lady of Sorrows Church food site, enjoy the service and the people.

"We like it here because we start some conversation and become friends with them and we have a great time here," said Morales and Rubio.

For Brittany Deckard and her family, it's a service they don't take for granted.

"It's a blessing. They have fun and I have fun. It's a blessing to be here," says Deckard.
