Mac Davis has been a star in music, movies, television and on Broadway in "The Will Rogers Follies". So it's no surprise to his fans that he's been chosen as a 2004 inductee into the Texas Country Music Hall Of Fame" in Carthage.
Born in Lubbock on January 21,1942, Davis first found success as a songwriter. Some of Elvis Presley's biggest hits, "Memories", and "In The Ghetto", were written by Davis. The Bobby Goldsboro hits "watching Scotty Grow" and "Daddy's Little Man" were also Davis songs. Davis became a recording star with his own songs, "I Believe In Music", "Baby, Baby, Don't Get Hooked On Me", and the one he ruefully says he'll probably be remembered for, "Oh Lord it's hard to be humble".
Although Mac Davis has found success in just about every phase of show business, he still insists he's most of all a songwriter. And he admits he still feels Lubbock in his soul. After all, Davis's hit song "Texas In My Rearview Mirror" ends with the line "And when I die you can bury me in Lubbock, Texas..in my jeans."
