TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

A gun threat forced 'Superman' moviegoers out of the Harkins Theatre at Arizona Mills Mall Tuesday night.

A caller told 911 that someone was pointing a gun at patrons while they were watching a movie.

Tempe Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Pooley said witnesses were extremely shaken up. "It was in 'Man of Steel', about halfway through the movie," Pooley said. "A couple of friends were sitting there and when they turned around they saw a subject described as white male with blond hair with black handgun. They also said this handgun had a laser on it."

Police arrived as the film was letting out and evacuated the rest of the theater, but they could not find anyone matching that description. Pooley said they believe he had already left the theater. He added that other witnesses described seeing the same man earlier in the film waving a Taser-type device.

Around 10 p.m., officers gave the all-clear and allowed people back into the theater. Pooley said we live in serious times and incidents like this are no joking matter. "Any time you point a weapon at somebody- whether it's simulated, whether it's fake, if it can be construed as a very real object, a real weapon- then they'll be charged with aggravated assault."

Arizona Mills Mall's General Manager David Johnston released the following statement on Wednesday: "Arizona Mills remains open for business today after the Tempe Police Department responded to a report at the Harkins Luxury 25 Cinemas last night.  Arizona Mills was not evacuated as reported and there was no disruption to business as the police conducted their investigation."

Anyone with knowledge of this threat should contact the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311.
