Flooding concerns near Doce Fire burn area

PRESCOTT, AZ (CBS5) -

Although the Doce fire will soon be out, monsoon rains will soon arrive, and the potential for flooding will be a concern for folks near the burn area.

"Definitely be concerned and take heed to what county emergency managers are suggesting for certain areas," said incident meteorologist Valerie Meyers.

Runoff patterns suggest those near Williamson Valley Road on the east-northeast side of Granite Mountain, as well as those on the west-southwest side of the burn areas should be on highest alert for flooding.  Only 15 to 30 minutes worth of heavy rain could cause major problems.

"Once you remove the vegetation and make those soils more hydrophobic, it's going to take less rain, in a shorter amount of time to really produce that same type of flow," Meyers said.

Experts suggest that flooding from heavy rains could be a concern for quite some time.

"Within those areas, give it a couple of years probably before you actually see a diminished flow during any type of rain event to where the vegetation is starting to hold the soils back," said Meyers.

The best advice for those in this, or any burn area, is to pay close attention to changing weather conditions and be ready to leave quickly if necessary.

"Listen to the watches and warnings that come out from the Weather Service and listen to the concerns expressed by Yavapai County emergency managers," added Meyers.

Community information will available on this, and other topics this Wednesday, June 26 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Williamson Valley Fire and Sheriff station located at 4155 W. Outer Loop Road.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
