TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

A woman locked inside a Tempe apartment near Mill Avenue and the U.S. Highway 60 almost didn't make it out.

On the afternoon of June 12, police said the victim decided she wanted out of prostitution. According to a police report, she walked out of the apartment where she worked. She only made it to cul-de-sac in front of 201 West before investigators said her suspected pimp, Brenton Melvin, got his hands on her.

"He went out, grabbed her by the hair and dragged her back into the apartment," said Tempe police Sgt. Mike Pooley.

A neighbor who called 911 told police she could hear a woman screaming, telling Melvin to leave her alone.

Police said, inside the apartment, the young woman was stripped naked. Her clothes were sliced off her body with a knife. According to the police report, she was punched in the face and choked. Chunks of her hair had also been cut out. Police said Melvin had filled up the bathtub. The woman told detectives she thought he was going to drown her.

"She was fearful because she told our officers that he was related to the Baseline Killer and that Mr. Melvin was capable of the exact same things that Mr. Goudeau had done," Sgt. Pooley said.

Goudeau's first conviction had to do with a rape and assault in 1989. It involved the victim being thrown into a bathtub.

Later, the Baseline Killer was convicted of a 2006 murder. Sophia Nunez, 37, was found shot to death and her body submerged in a bathtub.

"She was so desperate to get out of that situation, she was willing to run out of the apartment completely naked to get help and to get as far away from Mr. Melvin as possible," Pooley said.

CBS 5 did some digging to see if Melvin and Goudeau are indeed related. Records show some of Goudeau's immediate family members have the last name Melvin. However, paperwork did not definitively say how the two could be related.
