LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The lion cub named Sango who captured the hearts of East Texans has a new home at the Denver Zoo.
He was born at the Ellen Trout Zoo last July.
The species survival plan located a suitable female mate for Sango in Denver.
Zookeepers at Ellen Trout Zoo say that it was bittersweet seeing the lion they hand-raised leave. But they are excited he is starting the next chapter of his life.
"It was a very bittersweet moment to have him go," said zookeeper Beth Wegner. "Very proud because we have put so much work into him we had him for almost 11 months under our care and we've come a long way but it's very rewarding to have him be so much older and to go on and continue the next chapter of his life."
Staff at Ellen Trout Zoo say Sango's mate is about the same age as him and hopefully they will get along.
