Arrest paperwork reveals details about ETX motel murder

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

We're getting our first look at what police say happened during a murder at a Tyler motel two weeks ago.

 Darian Pilkinton, Michael Browning and Broderick Smith are in the Smith County Jail charged with Capital Murder. Lawrence Murphy Junior is charged with murder.

A stack of arrest paperwork explains how the release of motel surveillance video led authorities to the four men.

On June 19th, one day after the surveillance video aired on TV, a tipster called police to identify Lawrence Murphy, Jr. When detectives contacted Murphy's family, they said he had told them he was one of the suspects in the video and that he "F---ed up."

Police say Murphy contacted them himself and asked "What are y'all going to charge me with?" Police say Murphy then admitted he was "nervous and scared."

During their investigation, police made contact with another man who told them Darian Pilkinton was involved in the murder. That man told police that Pilkinton "bought drugs from Lester. Then when they saw how much he had they attempted to rob him." The man told police "Lester fought with [the suspects] and that Pilkinton said he shot Lester. Then, they took his money and drugs."

According to court documents, two other people who were in the motel room at the time of the murder told police they were awakened by the sound of gunshots. Those people told police that the suspects attempted to rob them, too.

Police say their investigation was at a stand still until the surveillance video released to the public. We've posted the entirety of both all four arrest affidavits that contain more details about the men's arrests HERE.
