LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Coronado High School graduate James Winters was on Dateline Friday, featured as one of the Navy officers who saved a woman and her two children after a terrifying accident on a California bridge.

Winters was honored right here on KCBD last year during one of our Hometown Hero segments.

Winters and his fellow Navy officers were transporting military equipment to a base in California when they saw a mangled car teetering halfway off a bridge.

Caught in traffic in the right place, at the right time, Winters and his men were transporting a large military forklift.

The men used the forklift to suspended the dangling car as rescue workers saved the mother, her 10-week-old baby and her 10-year-old daughter.

We spoke with Winters about that daring rescue back in April of 2012:

"That's when I started running. I stood in front of the car. She was on the opposite side of the bridge from me but it was probably only a 10-foot gap. I could see her, then she started screaming help me, help me, get my daughter, my daughter needs help. That scream, it just cuts right through you. It's like nothing you've ever heard before," Winters said.

Winters was honored for his act of bravery in California.

He's still in the Navy, and says he plans to continue that service for at least 20 years.
