Riverfest in Hartford postponed; no alternate date set

Posted: Updated:
HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Riverfest in Hartford scheduled for this weekend has been postponed due to unsafe water conditions and now, organizers are searching for an alternate date.

Officials with Riverfront Recapture said the river's strong current and floating debris are making it "impossible to safely launch and secure the three barges from which the fireworks" are to be fired.

"The recent heavy rains up and down the Connecticut River Valley have caused the river to rise, creating unsafe conditions," said Joe Marfuggi, who is the president and CEO of Riverfront Recapture.

Riverfront Recapture officials said they are worried about children potentially falling into the high waters.

The National Weather Service anticipated water levels reaching more than 14 feet on Friday, with a slight decrease on Saturday all because of the recent rain.

City officials said the Connecticut River is not flooded as of Wednesday afternoon, however, the water is up to the edge of the riverbanks.

Police have been in communication with Riverfront Recapture officials and determined it was not safe.

Thousands attend Riverfest every year and it is one of the city's premier events.

"It was a tough decision to make because Riverfest is such a popular event for the community - and so many people look forward to it each year," Marfuggi said in a statement.

The annual celebration was scheduled for Saturday, however, no new date has been announced.
