SOUTHIGNTON, CT (WFSB) -

A Southington elementary school teacher was arrested after police said he was trying to hire a prostitute.

Walter Freitag, 56, as well as five other people were arrested on May 29 in New Britain.

Officers went undercover and pretended to be prostitutes. Police said Freitag was one of the people who went up to them in the streets.

Freitag has been a fourth-grade teacher at the Strong Elementary School in Southington for years. The Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph V. Erardi Jr. told Eyewitness News Freitag was put on leave immediately.

At the time, school was still in session so a substitute filled in. Erardi said they'll finish up their investigation before the fall semester begins.

Parents reacted to the news Wednesday.

"You're supposed to be a mentor toward children, not doing stuff like that," said Jennifer Coowell, who is a parent in Southington.

"They should be professional," said Vinnie Klimkowski, who is a parent in Southington. "If somebody is like that, then they have a problem. They should screen teachers a little more."

Eyewitness News asked the superintendent if Freitag was on paid leave but we're told they do not get paid in the summer.

Freitag was charged with patronizing a prostitute and his next court appearance is on July 24.
