Trees growing out of swimming pool irk neighbors

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - A woman in Whitehaven is frustrated with the lack of action from the city or county in relation to what she calls a neighborhood nuisance.

Natalie Brown sent Action News 5 photos of her neighbor's pool that has trees growing out of it. Brown says the uncovered pool, filled with standing water and weeds, is breeding bugs and other pests. She is tired of spending money on bug spray, and mothballs to ward off raccoons. She is also sick of cutting her neighbor's trees herself because they are encroaching into her yard.

"It's like it's not an urgency to anyone," she said. "I talked with Councilman Collins, the mayor's action line. I've talked to the code enforcement."

Brown said she has not received help from anyone and she is fed up with waiting. She wants action to be taken.

"We count too," she said. "I pay the same amount of taxes as everybody else and I think I should have results."

It is not just the trees that are the problem for Brown. It is the standing water at the bottom of the pool, as well as the disrepair of the fence and the unwanted pests that have come along as a result of all three problems put together.

"I have little raccoons that come over and we have to throw out mothballs. That's unfair," she explained.

The Action News 5 investigators got her call and went to work. After more than six minutes, Andrew Douglas got through to someone on the mayor's action line, who wrote up the problems.

In addition to passing along the complaint to code enforcement, the person who answered the mayor's hotline said they would give Brown a case number so she can contact the Shelby County Health Department about the standing water problem.

When Douglas called Memphis City Councilman Harold Collins, who represents Brown's neighborhood, he said the matter is an environmental court issue. It is set for court in two weeks, July 19.

As for the neighbor who owns the pool property, Christine Reed wants dirt to fill up the pool so she doesn't have to deal with it anymore.
