Angelina Co. Sheriff's Office: Seriously injured Lufkin woman found under Hwy 94 bridge

ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Investigators with the Angelina County Sheriff's Office are treating the discovery of a seriously injured Lufkin woman under the Neches River bridge on Highway 94 West as a "suspicious incident." The woman was found around 9:45 a.m. Thursday morning.

"We're working the case up as a suspicious incident," said Lt. Pete Maskunas of the Angelina County Sheriff's Office. "We're taking precautions to make sure we cover every angle, and right now, we're treating it as a criminal case, just to be on the safe side."

Maskunas said the ACSO's information is still sketchy at this time. The 21-year-old woman is still in the Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston, and she hasn't been able to talk much to authorities. Doctors are waiting to see if they need to take her into surgery for treatment of her injuries, Maskunas said.

The woman suffered injuries to her legs, hips, elbows, ribs, spleen, eye socket, and cheek, Maskunas said.

The woman told authorities that the last thing she remembers before waking up under the bridge on Highway 94 is walking out of Jimmy's Bar in Trinity County after midnight Thursday. One witness saw her walk out of the bar and continue walking on Highway 94. Somehow, the injured woman used her cell phone to call her friends and direct them to her location, Maskunas said.

"When she is well enough to talk to us, we'll try to put the rest of the puzzle pieces together," Maskunas said. "We'll be trying to determine whether she was knocked off the bridge, she was thrown off, or she just fell."

Maskunas said if the woman fell off the bridge, it is about a 22-foot drop to where she was found.

"If in fact, she fell off the bridge, she's extremely lucky to be alive," Maskunas said.

Anyone with any information about the incident is urged to call Maskunas at (936) 634-3332.
