District 10-2A DI Preview

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - For 19 straight years, Newton has qualified for the playoffs. That's the longest active streak in East Texas. We are talking about the Eagles as well as Woodville out of district 10-2A division 1. Its time to continue our Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine preview.

Newton is the preseason number one team in class 2A division 1 according to the magazine. The Eagles are coming off a 13 and 1 season where they were state semifinalist. 2013 looks to be just as promising and maybe even sweeter if Newton can claim a state title. They will have a good chance as a total of 15 starters are coming back. Preseason offensive MVP, running back Kevin Shorter will carry the load offensively. Shorter had over 1,800 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns a season ago. Fellow back Brandon Johnson can also create big plays. He had 1,200 yards and 17 td's last year. Quarterback Roney Elam will lead the Eagles multiple wing offense.

Woodville meanwhile is coming off a 4 and 6 season where it went 3 and 4 in league play. In a huge eight team district, making the playoffs will be difficult. The Eagles do return a total of 10 starters, but graduated a bulk of their skill position players. Campbell says running backs Charles Fentress and Phillip Noble will be featured quite often in Woodville's run oriented offense. Junior quarterback Marqui Jackson will step in under center.

The magazine projects newton to win the district. Woodville on the other hand is predicted to finish just outside the playoff picture in 5th place.
