East Texans travel to Austin to support abortion legislation

Posted: Updated:
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Nearly 300 East Texans left Tyler early Tuesday, headed to Austin to peacefully show their support for statewide abortion legislation.

Six buses left the Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. The trip, sponsored in part by a local organization called Voice of the Unborn, was all-expenses paid for anyone who wanted to attend to show their support for the legislation.

Before the trip, a Catholic mass was celebrated to pray for the trip and to pray for the legislators debating the bill.

Senate Bill 1 calls for banning abortions after 20 weeks, which is when supporters of the bill say fetuses can feel pain.

But critics say the measure is an attack on a woman's reproductive rights.

The Texas House of Representatives could vote on their version of the bill as early as Tuesday.

The group is expected to return to East Texas Tuesday night.
