Metro school board could discuss testing for young students

Standardized tests have become a part of every kid's school experience, but some want to see the end of that sort of testing in the younger grades. It's a hot topic for parents, and Metro School Board members could soon weigh in.

"Not only do we need to know where our children are, but how well Metro is teaching our children," said Metro parent Elyndra Lee.

Standardized tests seem to have more weight now than ever, because they are used to evaluate schools and teachers.

And TCAP scores even make up a big part of a child's final grade. That has some parents fed up, so the Metro school board will tackle the controversial topic.

"I'm not against testing. What I am concerned about is what kind of tests we use, and how often we test our students," said school board member Jill Speering.

Speering has drafted a resolution that directs the district to study whether all of the high stakes testing is necessary. It also calls for eliminating the SAT-10 standardized tests that are given to the younger students as well.

"We don't go to school to learn how to take tests. We go to school to learn to become passionate about something, to learn what our interests are and then build on those interests," Speering said.

As far as testing goes, Lee and Metro parent Marquita Jenkins see the value in TCAPs and like knowing where their kids stand. But they don't like testing for young kids.

"For kids as young as kindergarten, I don't know. The kids are less structured. It's probably just a distraction, I don't see it really yielding anything," Jenkins said.

"This past year, I went in and moderated for a school, and the kindergartners were kind of sleepy. They were tired. They weren't focused," Lee said.

Speering was set to propose the resolution at the school board meeting Tuesday, but decided to hold off for about a month until after the district receives the results of its SAT-10 tests.
