The Lufkin football team is no stranger to the 7 on 7 state tournament. The Panthers have missed out on the tourney just once since 2000 and are headed to Leander later this week to compete once again. Wide Receivers KeKe Coutee and Jamal Jeffrey will give Lufkin a chance to make a deep run, but ultimately that will be decided by quarterback Trey Cumbie. The junior to be has looked sharp this summer and Jeffrey expects his QB to play well. Lufkin has earned a tough draw in its pool. The Panthers who must finish in the top two to qualify for the championship round are paired with defending state champion Katy, runner-up Cedar Hill, and Arlington Lamar. Lufkin begins pool play on Friday.
