SIERRA VISTA, AZ (CBS5) -

Two Sierra Vista girls reported missing Tuesday night were found safe Wednesday morning.

The girls apparently went to a local church and met with family friends before being asked to stay overnight without alerting their parents, said Carol A. Capas of the Cochise County Sheriff's Office about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The 14-year-old and 5-year-old girls originally told family members they were going tadpole hunting after a rainstorm in Sierra Vista on Tuesday night.

Haley Churney, 14, and her cousin, Brittany Marshal, 5, told the family they were going to a "wash" to capture tadpoles about 8 p.m., Capas said.

The family said various people were in and out of the residence, and that only when one of the girl's mother came home did they notice the girls were gone, Capas said.

The sheriff's office was contacted about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday and the county search and rescue team went to the nearby wash to search for the girls, but found no one.

Capas said the two girls had been living together with other members of the family for several years and that there had been recent issues with some family members and Haley.

Capas said Haley might have taken Brittany with her as she left the residence with some personal belongings, including clothing and shoes.

Both girls were entered into databases as missing and possibly endangered because of the information received by the investigating officers and the inclement weather in the area, Capas said.
